Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, March 26, 2014 — Yishun Town Secondary (YTS) pulled away from Raffles Girls’ School (RGS) in the final quarter to bag a 34–27 win in the first round of the National B Division Girls Basketball Championship. Lim Bei Xuan (YTS #11) led all scorers with 16 points, while Jeannine Tang (RGS #14) scored eight points to lead her team.

The game was tight defensive battle from start to end, with both teams only managing double-digit scores in the third quarter.

Raffles Girls’ started off the game well, throwing a suffocating defence at Yishun Town. They also did well to keep the ball away from the hands of Yishun Town’s key player, Bei Xuan (#11), who managed only five points in the first quarter.

Yishun Town started to find their rhythm in the second quarter, doing well on both ends to take the lead at the break. They managed to disrupt Raffles Girls’ offence by getting into the passing lanes, stealing the ball a couple of times. This allowed them to score both times on the counterattack.

Raffles Girls’ sloppiness in handling the ball continued in the third quarter. Yishun Town took full advantage of it to score even more baskets. Midway through the period, Raffles Girls’ showed some signs of fighting back. Zheng Tongxin (RGS #5) hit a three-pointer that started a run that trimmed the lead to just two points. However, Bei Xuan (YTS #11) answered back with a three-pointer of her own to keep the lead at a comfortable distance.

In the final quarter, Yishun Town sealed the game with their stout defence. They held Raffles Girls’ to only four points in the quarter. Even though Raffles Girls’ were able to take shot attempts, they were contested each time by Yishun Town. Yishun Town eventually pulled away with the 34–27 win, sealing their first victory of the season.

Yishun Town captain, Nicole Beh (#8), said, “This is not really our standard, but it was still okay towards the last two quarters. When the scores were close, some of the players motivated the team to play even better.”

Raffles captain, Goh Ming Wei (#9), said, “We did make mistakes and gave them quite a few turnovers, which were costly. But I think that we fought hard and tried our best.”
