Jurong East Sports Complex, Friday, March 7, 2014 — Nanyang Girls’ High were in a class of their own as they triumphed 34–15 over Bukit Panjang Government High to claim third place in the West Zone B Division Netball Championship.

The enthusiastic crowd heated up the atmosphere with their cheers, egging on the teams.

This is the second time Bukit Panjang have come up against Nanyang Girls’ after their upsetting 36–50 loss to them during Round 2 in 2012. This set the stage for a highly-anticipated battle between the two schools.

The difference in game play was evident from the first whistle. Bukit Panjang employed long passes to maximise the court space to attack. However, it was met with the iron defence of Nanyang Girls’, as the alert defenders intercepted these lobs. This resulted in turnovers that left Bukit Panjang trailing 3–9 at the end of the first quarter.

Nanyang Girls’ utilised short and swift passes to maneuver about Bukit Panjang’s tight defence. Nanyang Girls’ enjoyed a comfortable lead from the first quarter which boosted their confidence to attack in the second quarter. The chemistry between the players were reflected in the ease of receiving and passing the ball. This helped them to maintain a 21–6 lead at half-time.

The unerring accuracy of the Nanyang Girls’ Goal Shooter further widened the lead but Bukit Panjang maintained some composure to score seven points and trail by 13–28 at the end of the third quarter.

During the final quarter, Nanyang Girls’ strengthened their defense and limited Bukit Panjang to just two further points as they sealed a 34–15 victory.

Captain of Bukit Panjang said, “The game was not fantastic but we picked up the pace in the 2nd quarter to close the gap. This season had not been easy as it’s been an injury-laden season for us. Nevertheless, I feel proud of my team for coming as far as we did.”

Captain of Nanyang Girls’ High said, “We expected tough competition but we are also thankful because they had put up a good fight. Though we had a comfortable lead in the first quarter, we used that to spur us on further. It gave us more confidence and will to really fight on stronger for the rest of the match.”
