Tanjong Katong Girls’ School, Tuesday, March 4, 2014 — Tanjong Katong Girls’ School (TKGS) beat CHIJ St. Theresa’s Convent 3–1 in the National B Division Softball Championship. Despite the loss, TKGS advanced to the semi-finals along with St. Theresa’s.

Leading up to the game, TKGS had a 1–1 win-loss record. The win for TKGS meant a three-way tie between themselves, St. Theresa’s, and Methodist Girls’ School with identical 2–1 records. As a result, the two schools that conceded the least number of runs advanced to the semi-finals. That left MGS as the odd team out.

Adding to the tension of the game, St. Theresa’s had to win or not lose by more than five runs to TKGS to ensure a semi-final spot.

TKGS scored the first run of the game early in the first inning. St. Theresa’s tied it up at 1–1 in the third inning but TKGS managed to make a solid comeback with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to win the game.

TKGS only allowed Nastassha Tan (STC #10) to get on base in the first inning, striking out Dinie Raman (STC #5), Nurul Farah (STC #24) and Hillary Giam (STC #80).

Angelique Tongson (TKGS #17) started her team’s offence in the first inning when she was walked by Dinie Raman (STC #5). She proceeded to advance to second base when Aida Aziz (TKGS #11) placed a sacrificial bunt for the first out. Angelique proceeded to steal third base.

Sanggita Supranamiam (TKGS #7) got on base after an attempt to bring Angelique (TKGS #17) home with a sacrificial bunt. However, Raeanne Yong (STC #23) picked up the bunt and tagged Angelique (TKGS #17) for the second out. Sanggita Supranamiam (TKGS #7) went on to steal to third base and scored after a wild pitch by Dinie Raman (STC #5) for a 1–0 lead.

However, TKGS got no further runs when Dinie Raman (STC #5) struck out Yeo Gin Lin (TKGS #21) to end the inning.

The second inning passed with neither team able to score any runs.

Hasya Herman (TKGS #20) started the top of the third inning by striking out Kimberly Hay (STC #21). Hasya then gave Raeanne Yong (STC #23) a walk to get on base. Angelique Tongson (TKGS #17) then managed to throw Raeanne (STC #23) out at second for the second out.

Hasya (TKGS #20) gave up another walk, this time to Dinie Raman (STC #5). Hasya then intentionally walked Nastassha Tan (STC #10) and now there were two St. Theresa’s runners on first and second.

St. Theresa’s made a successful double steal, advancing both their runners into scoring position. Dinie Raman (STC #5) proceeded to steal home to score the first run for St. Theresa’s to tie the game up at 1–1.

St. Theresa’s threatened to score more runs when Nurul Farah (STC #24) was walked by Hasya Herman (TKGS #20). Nurul (STC #24) proceeded to steal second as Nastassha Tan (STC #10) tried to steal home. However, the inning ended for St. Theresa’s when the umpire called Nastassha (STC #10) out at third base for returning to the base after an attempt to steal home as the ball was with the pitcher.

The bottom of the third and the top of the fourth ended with both teams getting three up and three down.

The bottom of the fourth started with Sanggita Supranamiam (TKGS #7) getting struck out. Yeo Gin Lin (TKGS #21) hit a single, and then, remarkably, managed to steal her way all the way home from first base to give TKGS a 2–1 lead.

Wirda Haree (TKGS #39) stepped up to bat and hit a ball straight to Nurul Farah (STC #24). However, Wirda got a second chance when Nurul’s off throw to first base allowed her to get on to second base. Wirda proceeded to steal third base and then home, scoring the third run for TKGS for 3–1 lead.

At the top of the fifth inning, Raeanne Yong (STC #23) managed to steal second base but in an attempt to steal third, Raeanne was called out when she left the base early, and St. Theresa’s conceded the game to TKGS.

When asked how they felt about the game, Hasya Herman (TKGS #20) said, “I felt that the team played as one and we took the game play by play.” Dinie Raman (STC #5) and Nastassha Tan (STC #10) felt that the game was very intense and that they were grateful for their coach.

St. Theresa’s will go on to face Raffles Girls’ School while TKGS will face River Valley High School in the semi-finals.
