Anglican High School, Tuesday, February 25, 2014 — Dunman Secondary School (DMN) defeated Geylang Methodist Secondary School (GMS) 73–23 in the semi-final to qualify for the final of the East Zone B Division Boys Basketball Championship.

Dunman have defeated all teams so far in the East Zone Championship.

This is the first time that Geylang Methodist have secured a spot in the East Zone top four, thus qualifying for the National B Division Boys Championship.

Raymond Chu (Dunman #14) and Benny Yeo (Geylang Methodist #4) both tallied 11 points in the game.

Dunman went on a 9–0 run at the start of the first quarter to give themselves some breathing room over Geylang Methodist.

Benny Yeo (#4) of Geylang Methodist then put in the first two points for his team with an outside shot, thereafter drilling the wide open three to make it 14–5 halfway into the quarter. He contributed a total of eight points in this quarter, and was the only scorer for Geylang Methodist up to that point.

Dunman were intercepting weak passes, capitalizing on the transition offenses to give themselves a comfortable 11-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Geylang Methodist began to take outside shots as Dunman were playing a condensed defence, staying within the 3-point line. Geylang Methodist took some good shots but they just did not fall.

Dunman were also starting to miss open lay-ups. Choo Tin Liang (Dunman #4) took good chances but was struggling to convert his shots. However, after a few adjustments, the team were in a better form and they managed to pull away to lead 33–16 heading into the break.

Lem Wai Soon (Geylang Methodist #5) came off the court with an injury early into the third quarter.

Dunman started to lose focus again, missing several clear-cut scoring opportunities. However, they regained their form to build a 34-point lead at the end of the third.

Benedict Ong (#8) paced the offensive game for Dunman, dishing out good chances to his team mates. Darren Ng (#6) and Shukri (#9) responded with consistent shot conversion, totalling 15 points in the final quarter to give Dunman the 73–23 win to secure a spot in the final.

Dunman captain Tin Liang (#4) said, “I think it was not a good game but we managed to stop them. We managed to get some possession and steals. We had a stronger defense in the third quarter and they weren’t making their shots, thus we managed to extend the lead.”

Geylang Methodist captain Zheng Xian (#8) said, “We played very badly and didn’t execute what coach had told us to do, and failed to catch up with Dunman’s scoring. I think we have to improve on our rebounding the most, as Dunman scored a lot from second-chance points. As this is the first time our school has earned a spot in the nationals, we are just hoping to gain experience.”

Dunman now face Anglican High in the final on Tuesday, March 4, at Anglican High School at 3:20pm.
