Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, February 24, 2014 — Teck Whye Secondary fought back in the second half to beat Jurong West Secondary 64–60 in the second round of the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Lim Chuan Yong (Teck Whye #9) poured in 35 points to carry his team, while Benjamin Ang (Jurong West #13) had 14 points.

This is Teck Whye’s second straight win after narrowly beating Nan Hua High 49–46 last Friday. They now hold a 2–1 win–loss record in Group Y, and are tied for second place with Jurong West and New Town Secondary.

Chuan Yong (Teck Whye #9) put on a scoring display for his team, accounting for more than half of their total points. His eagerness on the offensive boards and timely putbacks allowed him to amass a huge amount of points.

Both teams matched up well against each other in the first quarter. Chuan Yong (Teck Whye #9) got going early, scoring 11 points for his team in the period. However, good fast breaks by Jurong West allowed them to snatch the early lead.

Good defence by Teck Whye in the second quarter saw them trim the deficit. They were able to stop Jurong West in the paint, denying the high-percentage shot attempt.

Teck Whye rallied back in the second half to take the lead. A porous Jurong West defence allowed Teck Whye players into the paint too easily, which resulted in easy scores for Teck Whye.

Jurong West switched to a full-court press late in the fourth quarter in an attempt to cut the lead. They were able to trim the difference to four, but it was as close as they would get. Teck Whye eventually figured out a way to break the press, securing their 64–60 win in the process.

Teck Whye captain, Nick Tan (#5), said, “I think it was good to win today, I am happy for the team. Our defence was not good at the start, but we managed to pull out the win. We need to improve on our offence and communication. We hope to win our remaining two matches and reach the semi-finals.”
