Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, February 21, 2014 — Teck Whye Secondary survived a fourth quarter Nan Hua High comeback attempt to win 49–46 in the second round of the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Lim Chuan Yong (Teck Whye #9) led all scorers with 22 points, while Yao Jun (Nan Hua #10) had 21 points to pace his team.

The game was extremely open early on, with both teams on the fast break at every opportunity. Au Jun Wei (Nan Hua #6) scored six straight points to open the scoring for his team. Teck Whye showed some good defence, challenging shots each time Nan Hua came into the paint. This made the difference, giving them a 19–15 lead at the end of the quarter. Chuan Yong (Teck Whye #9) accounted for 13 of his team’s points in the quarter, as he was the sole person to find any success against the Nan Hua defence.

Nan Hua held the lead temporarily in the second quarter, going on a 6–0 run to hold on to it. However, they ceded it on the next possession, after Adam Lim (Teck Whye #12) sunk two free throws to put his team up 24–23.

Teck Whye took advantage of Nan Hua turnovers to extend the lead in the third quarter. They went on an 8–0 run to give themselves a comfortable cushion. Nan Hua’s offence went completely cold, putting them in a deep hole to dig out of.

Chuan Yong (#9) stepped up for Teck Whye in the final quarter, doing everything from facilitating to crashing the boards. However, Nan Hua found their second wind as Yao Jun (#10) went on a personal 10–0 scoring run to pull his team within one point. With the game on the line, Nan Hua were unable to convert their final two possessions, missing their shots each time. This allowed Chuan Yong (#9) to ice the game with his two free throws, netting Teck Whye a 49–46 win.

Teck Whye captain, Nick Tan (#5), said, “Today was not bad. If we lost the game today, we would not have a chance of qualifying for the semi-final. We let them come back in the fourth quarter, we were too anxious at that point. We need to defend better and communicate more to improve.”
