Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, February 21, 2014 — New Town Secondary led from start to finish, beating Dunearn Secondary in the second round of the West Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

Regina Chua (New Town #11) led all scorers with 21 points.

New Town’s offence was humming smoothly from the start. They swung the ball around well, managing to get into the paint for easy scores. Dunearn Secondary’s defence was extremely porous, as their players were too lax in closing out on defenders.

Dunearn was unable to make open layups in the second quarter, which cost them. Other than ceding those opportunities, the New Town defence was fairly solid. Jody Ng (New Town #13) used her height to reach out and block any players that came into the paint. New Town led 29–10 at the half time break.

In the third quarter, New Town were able to get easy offensive rebounds. Dunearn failed to box out on each missed shot, allowing New Town players to waltz into the paint to get them. Regina (New Town #11) caught fire in this quarter, accounting for 10 points.

New Town took it down a notch in the final quarter, playing in a fairly relaxed state. This resulted in several lax passes by their players but Dunearn did not pounce on them at all. New Town closed out the game, winning 67–20 and bringing them one step closer to qualification for the semi-final.

New Town captain, Nichole Tan (#4), said, “I think they did well today. They worked together and communicated well. We have to prevent defenders from getting into the paint, I believe that was our weakness today. We hope to do well for the zonal semi-final.”
