Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, February 19, 2014 — Jurong Secondary continued their bid for a semi-final spot with a 78–19 win over Teck Whye Secondary in the second round of the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Lee Jia Hui (#6) and Mao Yuxian (#14) led Jurong with 11 points, while Lim Chuan Yong (Teck Whye #9) had 5 points.

Jurong dominated throughout the whole game, outmatching Teck Whye on both the offensive and defensive ends.

The first half saw Jurong using a 3-2 zonal defence, which continually forced Teck Whye into 24-second violations. Lim Chuan Yong (Teck Whye #9) was the only player who had any success scoring against the strong Jurong defence. On offence, Jurong would drive hard to the rim, making the high percentage shot from close range.

Jurong switched to a full-court defensive press sometime in the second quarter, which further compounded Teck Whye’s misery. Teck Whye found no way to break the full court press, turning the ball over each time. Jurong went into the half-time break leading 43–9.

Teck Whye’s problems with the full-court press continued into the second half, which saw them suffer a scoring drought. On defence, they did not seem to learn from their mistakes as they continuously let Jurong muscle their way into the paint. Zester Tay (Jurong #11) ended the game on a high note, sinking a three-pointer to beat the buzzer. The bench erupted, celebrating the made three-pointer along with their 78–19 win.

Jurong captain, Jia Hui (#6), commented, “We did well in rebounding, but we have to work harder on our defence. We’re aiming for the championship so we’re taking every match seriously.”

Jurong now top Group X with a 2–0 win–loss record, after their earlier win against Nan Hua High.
