Jalan Besar Stadium, Wednesday, February 12, 2014 — Institute of Technical Education (ITE) were crowned champions of the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Football Championship after a 1–0 win over Singapore Polytechnic (SP) in the final.

The IVP Football Championship is also known as the SR Nathan Challenge Cup. ITE last hoisted the trophy in 2010.

Md Shameer Aziq (ITE #10) headed in the winning goal in the 65th minute, off a free kick from Tajeli Bin Salamat (ITE #9). Tajeli was also awarded Man of the Match honours.

ITE dominated the possession of the ball in the first half, allowing SP little opportunities to get the ball to their opponents’ half. ITE displayed excellent ball movement, but they squandered many opportunities during the first half.

In the second half, SP had the bulk of the ball possession. Nur Asyidiq (SP #3) delivered well-taken free kicks to facilitate SP’s offence, but his teammates were unable to capitalize. ITE goalie Khairul Karim (#20) also managed to keep a clean sheet with several crucial saves.

In the 65th minute, Tajeli (ITE #9) delivered an accurate pass from a free kick to Shameer (ITE #10), who, despite being closely defended by Jeffrey Lightfoot (SP #2), still managed to find space to get his header in. The ball bounced off the ground past goalie Abrisam Durranu (SP #1) and went into the net to give ITE the winning goal.

Illyas Lee (SP #6) had an excellent opportunity to tie the game during the next possession, but his uncontested header was wide off the mark.

In the final moments, Muhammad Syazwan (SP #10)’s header attempt was thwarted by an excellent save by Khairul (ITE #20), which earned ITE the IVP Football Championship with a final 1–0 victory.

ITE coach Emran Yusoff commented, “The boys played badly in the first half and I had to wake them up. I think this is one moment where luck really shines on the team. Luck is a factor. I’ve always told the boys that luck is 1%, but this time it is 99%. The boys are as good as my sons, and I’m very happy for my sons.”
