Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, January 22, 2014 — Anderson Secondary School defeated Northland Secondary School 49–30 in the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Jonathan Teo (Anderson #10) scored a game-high 32 points, while Akmal Zubair (Northland #10) put in a team-high 18.

Anderson started off well, with Yuan Xiang (Anderson #6) and Jonathan (Anderson #10) being especially diligent at ripping offensive rebounds off the boards. Northland seemed to be disjointed from the beginning. Things changed after the Northland coach called for a timeout, and the team came back in a much better state. By the end of the first quarter, Northland managed to catch up and tie it at 8–8.

In the second quarter, Jonathan (Anderson #10) was the difference maker for his team, taking the initiative on many occasions to kick-start the attack.

On the other hand, for Northland, Zubair (Northland #10) was the one player who kept trying, always cutting into the paint and distributing the ball to his team mates. Offensively, he was focussed on team work while defensively he managed to intercept many passes. Despite that, Anderson were still able to extend their lead, ending the first half with a 25–12 lead.

Junrong (Anderson #15) played provider in the third quarter, passing the ball to his teammate Jonathan (Anderson #10), who then converted. Anderson were also making good passes, making their defenders run a lot.

Northland were resilient in the final quarter, putting in six points while keeping Anderson’s score unchanged for five minutes. Ge Jian (Northland #11), although small in built, put up a pretty impressive defence, while Daren (Northland #5) and Zubair (Northland #10) coordinated well in the key. However the team was unable to make good use of their scoring chances and Anderson finished the game 49–30 winners.

Anderson captain Georgene (#4) said, “I think we can definitely do better as this is not our standard, both offensively and defensively. We had trained very hard on our defence but we didn’t manage to do what was expected of us. We hope to improve on that for our next match versus Fuchun.”

Northland captain Hui Hung (#12) said, “We practiced very hard for the tournaments. Although we lost, I think it was still worth it. I guess it’s not about the final result as to me, the process is definitely more important. I’m also happy for my team’s progress and I think we’ve made good improvement.”
