Ynez Lim, 15, will windsurf for Singapore at the upcoming 2013 South-east Asian (SEA) Games. This will be the first trip to the SEA Games for Ynez who studies at St. Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School.

We caught up with Ynez to find out more about her.

Les Tan: When did you start sailing? How old were you then?
Ynez Lim: I was 8 when I started sailing optimist but joined Windsurfing when I was 12.

How did you get started with windsurfing?
Ynez: I started Windsurfing through my friends and my school which had asked me to go for the trials. I knew I too had a chance for the Youth Olympic Games 2014 in Nanjing, China if I train hard enough for it.

What is it about windsurfing that you enjoy? Has that changed over the years?
Ynez: What I enjoy the most is being able to windsurf in the open sea and to be able to do the sport with my team mates, though during competitions we will be unhappy with one another at times. Like people say, ‘Friends on land, enemies on water’. Friendships as team mates has changed through the years from being closer to one another.

What are your memorable moments in windsurfing? The good, the bad, the funny.
Ynez: When I first got qualified for Bic Techno Worlds 2012, which was also my first overseas trip with the team, was really memorable. The bad times are probably like my embarrassing times when I slip off my board each time when it’s slippery. A funny moment in windsurfing would be hard to describe for me because my team and I just laugh at even the simplest things.

What are the misconceptions people have about windsurfing?
Ynez: Whenever people think that Windsurfing is Sailing.

Which schools did you represent in windsurfing? What was a memorable inter-school race for you?
I represent St Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School. The most memorable inter-school race for me was my first inter-school race where I had gotten first. I was really happy about the win despite having muscle cramps in my arms.
