Padang, Sunday, November 3, 2013 – Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) beat rivals St. Andrew’s Secondary School 19-7 to win the Under-14 category in the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) International Rugby Sevens.

St. Andrew’s had previously topped ACS(I) in every one of their head-to-head meetings this year, including a 14–13 thriller in the National C Division Rugby Championship in August.

“This is the first time we’ve beaten them in any competition this year,” said ACS(I) coach Adrian Chong. “For the graduating batch of Sec. 2 boys, it’s sweet for them to take this trophy home from a prestigious competition like the SCC 7s.”

Two tries from Kai Gosian and one from captain Shern Lim held off St. Andrew’s despite a yellow card that left them down to six men for a stretch in the second half.

“I think my team played really well,” Lim said. “We stuck to our game plan and executed it accordingly. Credit to the Saints for giving an awesome performance, but I’m glad all our hard work paid off.”

Two other local schools made the championship matches at the SCC 7s Schools and Colleges competition. ACS (Barker Rd) lost 21–5 to Tanglin Trust School in the Under-16 bracket, while Raffles Institution fell 21–10 to United World College Dover in the Under-19 category.

Overall, it was an outstanding showing from the local schools, who grabbed seven of the 12 semi-final spots across the Under-14, Under-16 and Under-19 competitions.

“I’m proud of my boys,” said Raffles Institution coach Jamal Smeh. “I think they gave a good account of themselves as we are not a sevens team. So I think to make the finals is a very good achievement.”
