Singapore Polytechnic, Saturday, October 5, 2013 – Defending champions Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) defeated Temasek Polytechnic (TP) 27–4 in their final match of the 3rd Invitational Handball Games. Wong Sui Chyuen (NP #14) was the leading scorer of the match with eight goals.

Goh Yun Jia (NP #1) wasted no time at all when she scored a cut-in in the first few minutes of the match. NP’s timely interceptions and successful fast breaks saw them pull away to a 9–2 lead.

The first 2-minute penalty was awarded to Kiah Hui (TP #4) for a defensive error. This was followed by an illegal TP substitution, leading to yet another 2-minute penalty. Left with only five players on court, NP took advantage of the situation with quick cut-ins against TP, ending half time 15-2.

Despite trailing by 13 points, TP continued to put up a fight against NP and went for more shooting attempts in the second half, with Kiah Hui (TP #4) scoring the first goal after half-time.

NP capitalized on their fast breaks which allowed them to widen their lead. Julia Nga (NP #6) took the score to 23-3 just before a timeout was called. A successful 9m attempt from Vanessa (TP #6) marked the fourth goal for their team, and eventually a wing shot from Kimberly Chow (NP #13) ended off the game 27–4 to NP.

“This was the first competition that we’ve actually played together,” said Wong Min Pei (#9), TP captain and manager for her team. “To start up a new team like this and keep it going, it really isn’t easy. I was initially reluctant at first, but seeing how my teammates were so enthusiastic and passionate about the game, it really inspired me to carry on.”

Commenting on her opponents’ play, she added: “NP put up a strong fight today, they played well and were tight on their defense. Despite being a new team, they didn’t let us have it easy which truly displayed great sportsmanship. Congratulations to them.”

NP’s captain, Kimberly Chow (#13) said: “Today’s game was much better than our previous game with SP. We had more composure and were more relaxed in our play today. Overall, we really enjoyed our game with TP and I believe it was a good experience for both teams as well.”
