Singapore Polytechnic, Saturday, October 5, 2013 — Singapore Polytechnic (SP) relied on fundamentally sound defence to get past the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) 33–17 in the 3rd Invitational Handball Games.

The match was all even early on, before SP started to clamp down ub defence midway through the first half. They pulled away in the end to win in dominating fashion. Teo Kee Chong (SP #7) and Joseph Hoo (SP #10) were joint top scorers with six goals apiece.

SP were successful on their first trip down the court, Jonathan Chuang (SP #13) finding the net with a powerful shot into the lower corner.

SP’s waves were extremely successful, with their players finding themselves open for shots at the ITE goal. However, Mohamad Shahrin (#2) was more than up to the challenge, stopping quite a few attempts early on.

The game was temporarily suspended for a few minutes due to a scoring dispute when officials had to confer for a while before setting the scores at 6–5 to SP.

Bryan Lee (SP #11) helped SP to build up their lead in the first half. His excellent reflexes helped him to save multiple shots, while his strong arm started many a fast break for SP. SP ended the half up 15–7.

In the second half, ITE showed their physicality on offense in a attempt to cut the lead. They seemed to find a glimmer a hope, scoring three straight on one occasion to cut the SP lead to six points.

After a miscommunication on the bench along with a penalty, SP found themselves down to four outfield players. Nevertheless, Harry (SP #1) still managed to score a short-handed goal.

There was a minor scare for ITE when Irfan (ITE #9) went down with what seemed to be a cramp. He had to watch the rest of the game from the bench.

In the end, SP managed to pick apart a tired ITE defence, winning 33–17. This put them in the driver’s seat for the men’s title, with their remaining matches against Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) and Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) to come.

ITE’s captain, Irfan (#9) commented: “I think the game was quite challenging. The gap would have been closer if we were more accurate. But the team did well against a strong team like SP and we showed spirit throughout the game.”

Brandon Khoo (#9), the SP vice-captain, said: “We managed to pull off our defense today against their shooting threats and it was much better as compared to our previous games. Offense wise, our cut ins and fast breaks were more successful as well. However, our 9m shooting attempts could have been better.”
