PESEB, Evans Road, Friday, August 2, 2013 — Fairfield Methodist School defeated Raffles Institution 74–55 to enter their first-ever final in the South Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.

In 2012, Fairfield made it as far as the semi-finals before bowing out to Peicai Secondary. They finished fourth when they lost 44–52 to Raffles in the playoff for third place. However, there was no stopping Fairfield this year.

Krison Sum (#12) had an outstanding game for Fairfield with a game-high 21 points, including three 3-pointers. Nino Jansen Castillo (#14) poured in a team-high 16 points for Raffles while teammate
Danny Goh (#10) dropped in 15 points.

Fairfield were quick to kick into action with multiple baskets upon the start of the first quarter before Raffles finally got on the scoreboard through with a three-pointer by Marcus Soon (#5). However, Fairfield were able to take advantage of many opportunities to secure a 25–12 lead over RI at the end of the first quarter.

RI tightened up their defence in the second quarter and Fairfield had fewer opportunities to score in a quarter they won only by 13–12 to take a 14-point, 38–24 lead into half-time.

Fairfield outscored Raffles again in the third quarter, this time by 19–14, and led by 19 points (57–38) heading into the final quarter.

Fairfield established a 23-point lead at one point in the fourth quarter when a fast break attempt by Jaryl Tan (#6), was followed up with strong support by Krison Sum (#12) and Gavin Tay (#11) who finally managed to make a basket to bring the score to 63–40.

Fairfield’s lead provided them with enough of an advantage and Raffles never seriously threatened. A final basket by Danny Goh (#10) of RI saw the game end with Fairfield 74–55 winners.

The Fairfield players felt that it was a great birthday present for their school’s 125th anniversary, which falls on August 4, and which the school was celebrating that day.

Krison Sum (#12), captain of Fairfield, said: “We trained really hard but ultimately we believe that it is all part of God’s plan and without God, we wouldn’t be here. We are very thankful and honoured.”

Teammate Jaryl Tan (#6) further added: “It was a great win and we will take it as a lesson and apply everything that we have learnt in our final zonal match next week. We are really happy!”

Fairfield Methodist will face Peicai in the final of the C Division South Zone Basketball Championship on Tuesday, August 6, at Jurong East Sports Hall.
