PESEB, Evans Road, Wednesday, July 31, 2013 — Catholic High secured safe passage into the semi-finals of the South Zone C Boys Basketball Championship with a comfortable 62–16 win over Saint Andrew’s Secondary, effectively eliminating their opponents. St. Andrew’s had bowed out of the competition at the same stage last year.

Catholic started off well in the first quarter, racing out to a 16–2 lead. They utilised a full-court press that seemed to fluster St. Andrew’s players. They tried to break the press utilising brothers Tan Jun Rui (#15) and Tan Jun Ren (#9). However, that tactic proved to be unsuccessful as Catholic were alert enough to shut down any penetration, preventing the ball from leaving St. Andrew’s half.

This scene wore on for quite a long time, as St. Andrew’s players started to get visibly frustrated at not being able to break the press. Catholic were able to comfortably build on their lead going into half-time, even though the encountered a stretch where they missed a lot of open layups.

St. Andrew’s seemed to have some sort of inspiration in the final quarter, knowing that this could well be their final quarter of the season. They started to be more effective in breaking the full-court press and creating turnovers off Catholic High. However, they were unable to convert their baskets as Catholic High used their length, to alter the shot attempts of St. Andrew’s players. In the end, Catholic ran out 62–16 winners and they will face Peicai Secondary in the semi-finals.

Catholic High’s captain, Marcus Chang (#7) said: “We did not really put up a good performance today, we missed layups and I felt that we were very fatigued as a team. We need to watch out for Peicai and Fairfield Methodist as I feel that they would be the biggest threats to us for the zone title. I hope we will do our best to make the second round of Nationals and hopefully the top four.”

Tan Jun Rui (#15) of St. Andrew’s was reflective in defeat. “I felt that we played well today even though we lost. I hope that we will be able to improve next year and make it to the B Division team.”
