Singapore Basketball Centre, Friday, July 19, 2013 — In a decisive game that determined which team would proceed to the second round, Punggol Secondary outlasted Edgefield Secondary in a crucial fourth quarter to win 42–30 in Round 1 of the North Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship. With the victory, Punggol safely secured a round 2 spot.

Punggol utilized a full court defensive press in the first half of the game that did not prove to be effective as Edgefield’s Ashley Eng (#10) managed to single-handedly bring the ball up court with his speed on countless occasions. Edgefield had countless open looks at the basket, but they could not convert their shots. A free throw by Goh Si An (#8) gave Punggol a four-point lead (11–15) to end the first half.

Just seconds into the third quarter, Roshan Ahmad (#6) drove right into the paint for an easy uncontested two. Edgefield responded with a quick succession of baskets from Ashley (#10) and Cliff Ng (#14) to reduce the deficit to two points (15–17). With four minutes to play, Jason Chew (#11) capitalized on a steal and converted a fast break layup to put Punggol up 15–19. Not giving up, Edgefield answered with a strong drive from Cliff (#14). A floater from Lim Zi Quan (#4) gave Edgefield the tie at 19 apiece to head into the final quarter.

In the final quarter, both teams utilized full court defensive presses to contain the other. Edgefield was not as lucky as they could not convert their open baskets, while Punggol seized every opportunity they had to extend the lead. With under five minutes to play, Edgefield’s Ng Shi Yu (#15) sank a baseline jumper to reduce the deficit to six points (30–36). Punggol quickly regrouped during a time-out and they returned hungry. The combination of Roshan (#6) and Si An (#8) sparked a dominating 12–0 run for Punggol. Edgefield had no answer and Punggol emerged eventual victors with a 30–42 win.

Punggol’s captain Tan Ke Hong (#12) commented: “The game was quite fun. We had a lot of fighting spirit.”

Vice-captain Roshan (#6) added: “It was an aggressive game. If we lost the game today, we might not have made it to the second round.”

Edgefield’s captain Ashley (#10) commented: “They (Punggol) were good opponents. We have a lot of things to learn from them, such as teamwork.”
