PESEB, Evans Road, Monday, July 15, 2013 — Peicai Secondary put in a commanding performance against Bishan Park Secondary to win 75–14. This win puts Peicai in a tie with St. Andrew’s Secondary School for the lead in Group D of the South Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.

Peicai’s Darren Ng (#11) led all scorers with eye-catching 36 points, outscoring Bishan Park all by himself. He displayed an advanced game that belied his age, coupling extremely good footwork with a keen basketball intelligence.

Peicai were dominant from the get-go, setting up a full court defensive press that visibly intimidated Bishan Park. Peicai were able to take advantage of Bishan Park’s shaky passing and stagnant ball movement to create easy scoring opportunities on the fast break. Despite Bishan Park’s best efforts, they were unable to bring the ball safely up court and found themselves scoreless as they headed into the second quarter.

Going into the second half, following a large change in personnel, Peicai switched to a 2-3 zone which also proved to be successful. Their offense did not suffer at all, continuing to put up points on the board with impunity. Darren (Peicai #11) had the highlight of the game, using a quick and nifty spin move to evade three defenders and score in the paint. However, Bishan Park showed great will to put up a stronger resistance in the second quarter. They fought hard at each possession and shot at every opportunity, converting several of them.

In the third quarter, Peicai cranked up the intensity on the defensive end to the extent that Bishan Park started taking shots that were not in the flow of the possession, resulting in many bad air balls. Tan Kang Rui (Peicai #13) put up a nice shooting display, flushing three straight long jumpers from the wings.

Heading into the final quarter, it was evident that Peicai would not let up their defence even with their big lead. This was particularly evident in the final two minutes where Bishan Park were unable to advance the ball past their own three-point line. Each time the ball was inbounded, a Peicai player would immediately steal it and head to the basket for an easy layup. Darren (PCS #11) was a big beneficiary of this tactic, putting up 16 points in the quarter.

Even with the big win, Peicai’s captain Bryann Ong still had points to nitpick on. “I felt that we didn’t create enough in this game. Most of the points we scored were off turnovers and not through our offence. I am happy that we managed to execute our full-court press successfully and Darren (PCS #11) really dominated today for us and scored a lot. I hope that we can continue our form as our goal is to reach the Top 4 in Nationals.”
