PESEB (formerly CCAB), Tuesday, April 30, 2013 – Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) progressed to the final of the National A Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship after beating Victoria Junior College (VJC) 3-2.

Both sides gave an extraordinary account of their physical and mental grit, having to play five sets in this crucial match.

Having met in last year’s final which saw NYJC pip VJC to the championship trophy, both teams were again evenly matched this year. Having seen NYJC clinch the first set, VJC levelled the score at 1–1 by the narrowest of margins when they won the second set 26–24.

In a hotly-contested affair which saw two VJC players requiring treatment for their injuries, both sides traded points which eventually led to VJC winning the third set for a 2–1 lead.

In the fourth set, things were even tighter with the score level at 9–9, after which NYJC broke away and went on to win 25–20 to force the game into a final deciding set.

By this time, both sides were evidently feeling the effects of fatigue settling in rapidly. In the end, NYJC were the team who emerged victorious when they won the final set 15–9.

Mr Tan, the teacher-in-charge of NYJC, credited his team’s win to their mental toughness. Having suffered a setback in the form of a defeat by ACJC earlier in the tournament, his players were not unsettled by that loss but instead channelled that into motivation to play even better.

“As previous winners of the tournament, the pressure was on us to deliver again. However, I told the players not to focus on retaining the trophy but to place priority on winning their individual games instead,” said Mr Tan.

NYJC will now meet Anglo Chinese Junior College (ACJC) in the final. ACJC finished third in 2012. VJC will face off against Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) for third place.
