Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, April 26, 2013 — Tampines Junior College (TPJC) took home their first win in round one of the National A Division Boys Basketball Championship after defeating Meridian Junior College (MJC), 32–27.

TPJC started the game out strong, outscoring MJC 15–8 to take a seven-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter commenced with a three pointer by MJC’s Bai Shi (#7), reducing the deficit to four points at 15–11. It was a low-scoring quarter, with both teams unable to convert many open looks and free throw attempts. A steal and a fast break layup by TPJC’s Clarence Tan (#14) allowed his team to end the half leading at 20–13.

MJC attempted a comeback in the third with a stricter defensive press and successfully contained TPJC’s offence. MJC’s Yang Chen (#15) poured in six straight points to reduce the deficit to a single point. Despite the stifling defence, TPJC’s Lin Zhi De (#10) sank a tough shot from beyond the arc to halt the run. Zhi De’s shot was TPJC’s only bucket of the quarter.

MJC’s Jason Ng (#9) stepped up and dominated the paint. Jason collected several offensive rebounds and every single defensive rebound during the quarter. He also made five impressive blocks on TPJC’s shot attempts. A jumper by MJC’s Guo Ziyu (#10) ended the quarter with his team trailing 21–23.

In the opening seconds of the final quarter, Ziyu (#10) sank two free throws to tie the game at 23 apiece. TPJC responded with a 5–0 run to pull ahead. Yet, Ziyu (#10) halted the run with a tough layup as MJC continued to trail at 25–28.

After a pair of free throws from TPJC’s Chuang Kuo Wei (#5), Bai Shi (#7) countered with an open drive to keep MJC’s hopes alive. However, it was not enough as Kuo Wei (#5) sank a layup in the dying seconds of the quarter to seal the victory for TPJC with a final score of 32–27.

TPJC’s captain, Daniel Loh (#9), commented: “This was a very close game. We have been training hard during the off season and we played our best for this first win.”
