Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, March 11, 2013 – Deyi Secondary beat North Vista Secondary 67-39 to make history by winning the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship for the first time.

Leona Ng (#5) of Deyi had a game-high 18 points, including three 3-pointers, while Shirley Long (#13) of North Vista had a team-high of 12.

Both schools were tied 4-4 after the first four minutes before Deyi pulled ahead after converting turnovers by North Vista. Deyi led by 10 points (16-6) after the first quarter.

The second quarter saw North Vista intercepting passes as Deyi started losing some of their momentum. This allowed North Vista to narrow the deficit to two points (20-22). The Deyi coach then called a timeout to break North Vista’s comeback. Deyi reentered the court a different team, and immediately improved on their play to gain back their lead to end the quarter with a 30-21 lead.

From then, Deyi went on to control the game as the players focused on making long passes to speed up the game. Deyi’s Lew Shu Ying (#10) made the second 3-pointer of the match to spark her team into a scoring spree and her team finished the third quarter leading by 23 points (53-30).

Even with three of their key players fouled out, North Vista kept on fighting. Doreen Goh (#8) of North Vista stood out as she managed to convert Deyi’s turnovers with speed and agility.

Still, Deyi’s control of the game saw them take a 30-point (65-35) lead by the middle of the last quarter, before they wrapped up the match with a 67-39 scoreline.

Zoey Suan (#12), the Deyi captain, felt that her team had played impressively and was satisfied with their play.

“We never expected to have made it this far, and to be here is already a bonus. Winning the championship is amazing. I have waited five years for this,” said Zoey.

The 17-year-old continued: “I’ve never expected to be so close to them (her teammates) because of our age-gap. Our opponents were very tough today and they had a great fighting spirit as they played hard.”

Deyi had previously lost 41-50 to North Vista in the second round, and this time around, they focused more on improving their defence while preparing for the final.
