Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, February 20, 2013 – Canberra Secondary defeated Deyi Secondary 61-49 to register their second Round 2 win in the North Zone B Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.

Gabryl Koh (#7) of Canberra Secondary stole the limelight by scoring a game-high 17 points while Deyi’s captain, Krish Loy (#11), was not too far away with a team-high 16 points.

“We could always do better, but it was an enjoyable game,” said Krish after the game.

Initially, Deyi led 4-1 in the first quarter. However, Canberra leveled by at 9-9. By the end of the first quarter, Canberra were leading 13-9.

In the second quarter, Canberra’s speedy Aaron Sim (#9) was creating opportune moments for his team to score. However, even with Canberra closing down their opponents, it was balanced out by Deyi’s specialty — 3-pointers.

Krish scored a total of four 3-pointers in the game, with Chua Yong Le (#12) and Zheng Jia Hao (#9) scoring one each.

“Deyi is a good team with many sharp shooters,” said Anthony Tan (#6), captain of Canberra’s team.

Though Deyi outscored Canberra 21-19 in the second quarter, they were still trailing Canberra by four points (28-32) at half time.

The third quarter was what determined the outcome of the game.

Leading 34-31, Canberra went on a scoring streak. They went on a 14-0 scoring run to establish the largest lead of the game at 16 points (47-31).

Deyi tried to fight back but managed only eight points in the third quarter to trail 36-49 heading into the fourth.

The fourth quarter was a rather even one, with Deyi outscoring Canberra 13-12 but the damage had been done in the third and Canberra wrapped up the game 61-49 winners.

Anthony felt that his team did well in their free throws but needed to work on their defense.

“We had wanted to win by a larger point margin,” said the Canberra captain.

Deyi will face Nan Chiau High on Friday, February 22nd, at 2.20pm while Canberra will take on defending champions, North Vista Secondary, at 1.10pm.

Both games will be played at the Singapore Basketball Centre.
