Singapore Sports School, November 10-11, 2012 — Singapore’s Jerryl Yong, 16, won a surprise bronze medal in the Singapore leg of the Fina/Arena Swimming World Cup.

Swimming in the 200m butterfly on the first day of competition, he equalled his personal best time of 2 minute 2.96 seconds to finish third. The race was won by Kazuya Kaneda of Japan in 1:52.23 while Christopher Wright of Australia was third in 1:57.03.

Said the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) student: “I’m very honoured and very pleased that I managed to get a bronze. I didn’t expect to do as well as I did. This is definitely the most important medal I ever got. I’ve won in age group competitions and regional events before, but not at a global event.”

In the same race, compatriots Lee Zheng Kai (2:06.73) and Dylan Tan (2:10.69) finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Tao Li won two medals in the 50m and 100m butterfly events.
