Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, August 7, 2012 — In a game that was close all the way until the last three minutes, when Dunman Secondary pulled ahead to end the game with a decisive 63-53 victory over CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh), winning their first second round game in the National C Division Basketball Championship.

Jayne Chan (#12) was the top scorer for CHIJ, with a game-high 35 points. Being one of the smallest players on court, she made up for it by being the fastest. Once her teammates managed to intercept the ball, they would pass it to her without fail, trusting in her ability to execute flawless drives and lay-ups.

At one point, familiar with Jayne’s habit of standing apart from her teammates to await their passes, Dunman’s Putri (#5) and Amanda (#7) stayed behind to guard her as their offense advanced the ball. Sure enough, when CHIJ managed to grab the ball and pass it to Jayne, the two were already in place to stop her.

Even that, however, proved futile, as Jayne still managed to dash forward to receive the pass, and then outrun the both of them on her way to Dunman’s basket.

Repeatedly running the length of the court for the entire game took an obvious toll on Jayne, who often fell hard onto the court after bumping against the larger, stronger Dunman players. CHIJ’s time-outs were the only opportunities for her to sit and catch her breath. Despite her fatigue and injuries, she played through to the end of the match, continuing to score for CHIJ right up to the last minute.

Dunman, on the other hand, had more offensive options, with both Putri (#5) and Sofia (#12) adept at making fast breaks to penetrate CHIJ’s defense. Sofia was also very accurate with her shots from mid-range, effectively circumventing the need to plunge into CHIJ’s zone defense formation. Putri was the top scorer for her team with 16 points, and Sofia was not far behind with 14.

The game stayed extremely close, with stretches of time where both teams did nothing but exchange the lead back and forth. Even when one team had managed to successfully build up a lead, the other would suddenly make a push to tear it down.

CHIJ’s biggest lead in the third quarter was seven points after Jayne (#12) made a free throw to put her team ahead 30-23. In the last three minutes of the third quarter, Sofia (#12), Pearlyn (#15), Amanda (#7), Tanya (#10) and Adlina (#14) from Dunman each scored two points, quickly eroding the gap. With the score now tied at 33-33 and only five seconds left in the third quarter, Amanda then put in another two and temporarily gave Dunman the lead.

In the final quarter, with only 2:40 left on the game clock and Dunman ahead by one point at 50-49, Putri (#5) made a clutch three-point shot to extend Dunman’s lead. Dunman then went on a quick scoring spree, and a minute later, they were no less than 10 points ahead of CHIJ at 59-49.

In the final minute of the game, CHIJ continued to struggle to close the gap, but it was too late to turn the game around.

Dunman will next play Nan Chiau High, who beat Anglican High . The match will be held on Monday, August 13th, 1pm at Clementi Sports Hall. The winner of this match will have a high chance of moving through to the Top Four.

CHIJ Toa Payoh will face Anglican High, also on Monday, August 13th, 1pm at Clementi Sports Hall. Both teams are under threat of elimination and will be fighting hard to stay in contention for the semi-finals.
