Clementi Sports Hall, Thursday, August 2, 2012 — Dunman Secondary started the match with a lead that Peicai Secondary never managed to catch up to, eventually winning 68-39 to top their group with a 3-0 win-loss record in this first round of the National C Division Basketball Championship.

With two losses prior to this match, Peicai had already been eliminated from Round 2; this third defeat now places them firmly at the bottom of the table.

Dunman began the match by getting a quick eight-point lead before Peicai managed to score their first points. Peicai’s defense were no match for Dunman’s Liew Jia Ming (#14) and Alex Shao (#15), who could physically block them from grabbing both offensive and defensive rebounds. Unable to penetrate Dunman’s defense, Peicai were reduced to only scoring from mid-range shots.

The most spectacular player of the match was Peicai’s Teh Zhong How (#9), who finished with an incredible game-high 28 points, 21 of which came from successful three-pointers.

Zhong How was the only Peicai player who was able to consistently outwit Dunman’s defense. He kept a cool head throughout the match to retain his accuracy even while Dunman continued to pull ahead of his team. In the third quarter, Zhong How advanced the ball all the way up to the brink of Dunman’s perimeter, paused as he surveyed his waiting opponents, and then threw in a three-pointer right over their heads. Zhong How made three successful three-pointers in a row this quarter alone, and at least one in each of the others.

Dunman, however, were as a team far more athletic and capable than Peicai. Almost the entire squad made the score-sheet, with the top contributor, Joshua Aias (#13), scoring all his 12 points in just the third quarter. Despite leading from the start, Dunman did not let complacency dull their edge, and continued to dominate the match all the way to the end.

Despite the clear victory, Dunman’s captain Teck Chong (#11) felt that there was much to work on.

“Our defense is not very good. We need a more aggressive defense if we want to get to the Top Four,” he said outright.

Asked about the team’s target for this season, Teck Chong replied calmly, “Just to enter the final and get the championship.”

With this result, Peicai Secondary finishes at the bottom of their group with three losses. Peicai were the South Zone runners-up during the zonal championship.

Dunman, now firmly at the top of their group, will move on to the second round of the Nationals along with Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary.
