PESE Branch, Monday, July 23, 2012 — Peicai Secondary outplayed Fairfield Methodist School 52-30 in the semi-finals of the South Zone C Division Basketball Championship to gain a spot in the final.

They will play Catholic High, who beat Raffles Institution 60-43 in the other semi-final.

Despite rallying calls for “Defense!” by their bench players throughout most of the first quarter, Peicai took a 12-4 lead after the first 10 minutes. The Fairfield Methodist players were struggling to get past the Peicai defenders, and most of them were too overwhelmed to make an accurate shot. At the same time, Fairfield Methodist were unable to defend against Peicai, allowing their opponents to score multiple times.

Peicai remained in the lead for the rest of the game as their ability to intercept Fairfield Methodist’s passes and to win reboundsgave them the edge. They were able to shoot accurately under pressure, and thus were able to overcome Fairfield Methodist’s defense.

Fairfield Methodist’s Krison Sum (#12) stood out. He was unafraid to go up against the Peicai defenders and he finished with a team-high 11 points.

“We did quite badly,” said captain of Fairfield Methodist, Benedict Ng (#13). “Most of our team are still sick, and recovering from illness, so we couldn’t really concentrate on the game and we couldn’t play well. We didn’t do our best.”

“We may be able to beat RI for 3rd place. But RI is stronger. We need to play well in the next game to get third,” he conceded.

Melson De Galicia (#7), vice-captain of Peicai Secondary, said that he was pleased with his team’s performance.

“We did great! We managed to force them to play our game, and everyone played a part in the game just now,” said Melson.

“It seems like Catholic High may win the final. But maybe if we put enough pressure on them, we can win. We’re basically the underdogs,” continued Melson.

Peicai and Catholic High will be facing off in the final on Wednesday, July 25th. The match will be at Jurong East Sports Hall, at 1.00pm.

Fairfield Methodist’s rival for third place will be Raffles Institution. They will be playing on Tuesday, July 24th, at PESEB. Tip off is at 2.15pm.
