PESEB, Monday, July 16, 2012 — Catholic High beat Queensway Secondary 56-32 for their third win in Round 2 of the South Zone C Division Basketball Championship. This is Queensway’s second defeat in this round.
The top scorer of the game was Catholic High’s Nicholas Woon (#13) with 17 points, while Queensway’s top scorer was Alex Qzt (#11) with 11.
Toh Tze Cong (#15) of Catholic High was the player to watch in the first quarter. He was easily the tallest player on court, and used his height to his advantage. The team was mainly passing the ball to him so score basket after basket. Catholic High ended the first quarter with a 15-6 lead.
In the second quarter, Catholic High was able to widen their lead, ending the quarter at 30-12. One notable moment in the quarter happened in the last ten seconds before the buzzer went. Tze Cong (#15) raced down the length of the court to score a 2-pointer, without any Queensway players chasing back to defend him, preferring instead to just watch on from the other end of the court while he scored.
Queensway fought hard in the third quarter, and outscored Catholic High 15-7 in this quarter. Queensway were able to intercept some of the Catholic High passes and make multiple attempts to score.
The last quarter saw Catholic High find their pace again and begin racking up the points to make up for their dismal performance in the third. They also shut down Queensway with their defense. Catholic easily outscored Queensway 19-7 in the fourth quarter to end the game 56-32 winners.
Despite their victory, team captain Warren Wong (#12) of Catholic High said that he was not pleased with his team’s performance.
“We weren’t concentrating. There should have been less turnovers. Next time when we play, we need to try to treasure the ball,” said Warren.
Asked about his hopes for the season, Warren replied: “National Top 4.”
Catholic High’s next game is on Friday, July 20th, at 11.45am. They will be playing against Guangyang Secondary at PESEB.
Queensway will be playing their next game at PESEB, on Wednesday, July 18th at 11.45am against Gan Eng Seng School.
