Anglican High School, Tuesday, July 10, 2012 — East Spring Secondary outscored Changkat Changi Secondary 68-22 in the first round of the East Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.

Both Wayne Lee (#10) of Changkat Changi and Chan Qing Yang (#5) of East Spring were the game’s top-scorers, chalking up 14 points apiece for their respective teams.

East Spring took the lead in the first quarter. They were able to easily intercept Changkat Changi’s passes and could catch their rebounds such that they had multiple attempts to score. Moreover, Changkat Changi were often slow on the defense, and so there was little pressure on East Spring to shoot. At times, half of their team was still at the other end of the court while East Spring players were making shots at their basket.

The second quarter saw Changkat Changi making a greater effort to put up a strong defense. Despite so, they were unable to properly mark the East Spring players, and tended to lose track of them.

East Spring were also faster and able to get to Changkat Changi’s basket earlier than them. However, their inaccuracy stopped them from getting a higher score. Changkat Changi’s Wayne Lee (#10) also drew the attention of the East Spring players with two successful 2-pointers. This ended the second quarter with 34-8.

In the third quarter, East Spring focused their attentions on their defense. At one point, there were three East Spring players marking Wayne (#10), which prevented him from making many clear shots. However, in one instance, he managed to break free of the defenders and raced down the entire length of the court to score a lay-up for his team.

Changkat Changi fought back in the last quarter. They were able to make a few successful shots by having Wayne (#10) and Clarence Lim (#5) team up. Clarence’s small size allowed him to quickly dodge the East Spring defenders, and get the ball to Wayne (#10) for him to score. However, it seemed like whenever East Spring attacked, Changkat Changi were usually unable to intercept and gain possession of the ball.

Despite their loss, the Changkat Changi players were still rather cheerful and effervescent.

Solomon Selvarajoo (#9) said that he was pleased with his team’s team-work and their fighting spirit.

“It’s also our first time playing as a team,” commented Eldrich Manaol (#8), rather proudly. For them, it seemed, the experience of playing was more important than winning.
