Jakarta, Thursday, July 12, 2012 — Singapore had a gold rush at the 14th Asian Schools Championships as they girls’ team swept the the singles, doubles and team events.
The first gold was won by Joey Yeo in the Singles while the second came from the duo of Kimberly Ooi and Tracy See. The girls’ team of rolled to gold after a slow start in block 1 of the team event.
The Singapore girls were positioned third after the first block. The Singapore girls’ Team A started their charge in the fourth game of the second block with a 839. They then followed it up with a 743 and 822 for a collective score of 4,759 to take the gold from early leaders Team Korea and Team B Indonesia.
The first block leaders, Indonesia Team B, slipped down to finish third overall with 4,612 pinfalls as they failed to maintain their consistency into the second block.
Team Korea came back after bowling a high 841 in the fifth game to trail the Singapore team by a mere 5 pins. However, they could not capitalise on their form in the next game as they bowled a combined 775 for the sixth game, for a collective pinfall of 4,707.
Our Singapore girls’ Team B of Joy Yap, Nur Dyana, Charmaine Lim and Michelle Ng finished in fourth place with 4,593 pinfalls, missing out on third by 19 pins.
In the boys’ event, the Singapore boys’ Team B of Benedict Tan Xuan Wei, Ng Kai Xiang, and Marcus Leong Guo Rui almost had a golden finish. They catapulted themselves into second position after bowling a 941 in Game 4. They then carried on to bowl 762, 825 for a collective finish of 5,028.
However, this was not enough to topple the leaders, Indonesia Team A, consisting of Billy Muhammad Islam, Diwan Rezaldi, Sean Christian Reinhart, and Adhiguna Widiantoro. The Indonesians were having a splendid game when they stormed through the first block with a strong 979, 889, 846 to give themselves a 153 pinfall advantage moving into the second block. They then finished the second block with 798, 809, 857 for a final pinfall of 5,178.
Our Singapore boys’ Team A lost their third position momentarily after Game 5 but managed to come back back with a 902 in their last game to reclaim their bronze position with a total pinfall of 4,978 ahead of Kuwait and Japan who finished with 4,877 and 4,859 respectively.
The boys missed out on any medals in the All-events standings. Our closest finishers were Javier Tan (4th), Darren Ong (5th), Muhammad Jaris Goh (6th) and Marcus Leong (7th).
Singapore currently leads the medal standings with 6 gold, 3 silvers and 1 bronze. Only the top 16 in both the boys and girls All-events will move on to the Masters 1st block of 8 games.
