Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, July 9, 2012 — In a game which could have gone either way, Hougang Secondary beat Christ Church Secondary 46-36. However, they were unable to advance into the second round of North Zone C Division Basketball Championship.

Despite Hougang’s victory, Christ Church qualified for the second round at their expense, while Deyi Secondary are also through after winning Group E. Although Hougang, Christ Church and Deyi all finished with identical 3-1 win-loss reocrds, the points difference between the three schools resulted in Hougang being placed third, and thus losing out on a spot in the second round.

Amos Ou (#6) of Hougang had a game-high 15 points while Teoh Wei Shen of Christ Church had a team-high 13.

Hougang quickly took the lead in the first quarter with a string of 2-pointers. Christ church had problems getting past their defense despite many attempts at scoring. Christ Church were also unable to shoot accurately under pressure, which led to several missed opportunities. This allowed Hougang to end the first quarter leading with a score of 13-9.

In the second quarter, one of Hougang’s top scorers, Sean Khor (#11), managed to elude the Christ Church defenders time and time again to score a total of 6 points — the total number of points that Christ Church scored for that quarter.

The third quarter saw Christ Church come back with renewed strength and energy to outscore Hougang 10-7. Two successful 3-pointers made by Christ Church’s top scorer, Teoh Wei Shen (#10), helped to close the gap between the two team. One of the 3-pointers came at the buzzer for Christ Church to trail only by five points (25-30).

With a Round 2 spot at stake, both teams went for it in the last quarter. Hougang were always slightly ahead by about five points, despite Christ Church’s best efforts to catch up. Whenever Christ Church scored a 2-pointer, a Hougang player would always follow with a lay-up or another successful shot to keep his team ahead.

During this frantic quarter, the coaches of both teams called multiple timeouts to change their strategies.

Christ Church missed multiple opportunities to score when their players were fouled and allowed free throws. Hougang took those same chances when it came their way, as they managed to score at least one point whenever they were given free throws.

Even till the very last second, when Hougang were leading by 10 points, Christ Church never gave up the fight. Despite their loss, they had gained enough points to ensure that they would qualify for the second round on points difference.

David T’en (#6) of Christ Church said that he was pleased with his team’s efforts.

“We were good at attacking. We kept getting the ball. We also hope, at least, to get into the second round,” said David.

Such hopes have been fulfilled as Christ Church and Deyi make their way into the second round of the championship.
