Clementi Sports Hall, Thursday, July 5, 2012 – Fajar Secondary fought hard to notch their first win of the West Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship when they beat Yuan Ching Secondary 33-21.
Both teams had lost all their previous three matches.
Fajar led the game from the start, taking the first half 13-8, before holding off Yuan Ching for a hard-earned 33-21 win.
Despite most of the Fajar players being shorter than their counterparts, they were able to penetrate the Yuan Ching defence with their speed and agility. At the other end of the court, Fajar’s height disadvantage also did not stop them from catching rebounds and making interceptions.
Meanwhile, a lack of alertness and inaccuracies at the basket were Yuan Ching’s downfall.
Fajar captain Javier Liu Kang (#8) led his team’s attack with a game-high 13 points. Jeron Goh (#5) came in second with 10 points.
Yuan Ching’s Jackson Putra Bey (#6) was the top scorer for his team with 5 points.
Javier was very pleased with his team’s performance.
“The team played awesome. Teamwork was good. In our next game, I don’t think we will win but we will try our best,” Javier said.
The Fajar team only consists of eight players, of which six are Secondary Ones. Javier attributes their small team to a lack of sign-ups.
When asked what was the most popular sport in their school, Javier exclaimed: “Football.”
Fajar will aim to garner another win when they meet Hillgrove Secondary, who are second in the table with 9 points. Yuan Ching will try to stop their losing streak when they face Jurongville. Both games are on Monday, July 9th at Clementi Sports Hall.
