PESEB, Tuesday, July 3, 2012 – Bukit Merah Secondary fought valiantly, but could not avoid a 48-16 defeat by Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary in the first round of the South Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.
The defeat means that Bukit Merah are out of the competition, having lost all of their Group C matches. Meanwhile, the victory gives Kuo Chuan their first win, but it was not enough to see them through to the next round, after earlier defeats by RI and Guanyang.
The game got off to a tight start with Kuo Chuan edging Bukit Merah 9-8 in the first half. Kuo Chuan had plenty of chances but just could not convert them. They finally regained their accuracy to put in 29 points in the last quarter to take the 48-16 victory.
Kuo Chuan’s Chay Hong Da (#6) emerged as the game’s top scorer with 10 points. Muhd Saadan (#7) from Bukit Merah was the top scorer for his team with six points.
The 16 points that Bukit Merah put in was more than what they scored in their previous three matches combined.
Despite the defeat, Bukit Merah captain Bryan Ng Chin Teck (#6) was pleased with his team’s performance.
“We played better than usual. I am happy with the performance,” Bryan Ng said.
While Bukit Merah exited the competition on a high, Kuo Chuan Prebyterian will next face SJI International in their final match of the competition on Thursday, July 5th. Both teams will be playing for pride and a chance to gain a second victory.
