Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, June 25, 2012 – Swiss Cottage Secondary took a 32-18 win over Yuan Ching Secondary in the first round of the West Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.

Yuan Ching got off to a slow start, only managing to score their first two in the second quarter. Although Swiss Cottage led by a comfortable margin throughout the game, Yuan Ching finally bounced back in the final quarter to score more than in the previous three quarters combined, showing a fighting spirit despite the large deficit.

Lai Jian Wei (#5) had a game-high 17 points for Swiss Cottage while his teammate Jeremy Chew (#11) had eight points. Their teammate Tao Zhen Yuan (#6), easily the tallest player on the court, used his height to the team’s advantage by blocking shots and catching rebounds.

Yuan Ching’s Jackson Putra Bey (#6) and Clement Tan (#5) also made their presence felt. Jackson spearheaded multiple fast breaks over the course of the game but his team were unable to score consistently in the first three quarters due to a lack of accuracy.

The most action took place in the fourth quarter, with Yuan Ching redoubling both its defensive pressure and its offensive attempts. Swiss Cottage held an 18-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but Yuan Ching continually denied them a larger lead.

In the final minute, Yuan Ching’s Clement Tan was fouled on a successful shot, resulting in a three-point play. He elected to go for the rebound with his free throw, and was fouled once again, converting it into another three-point play, although he subsequently missed with the free throw.

Sean Patrick Delos (#8), the captain of Swiss Cottage, thought his team played well, but with room for improvement.

“Our offense was quite good, we also managed to stop some of their fast breaks. What can be improved is maybe our coordination; sometimes when the ball goes out, when I’m dribbling the others are not paying attention, so there’s a turnover,” said Sean.

Yuan Ching’s next opponent will be Hillgrove Secondary who beat Jurongville Secondary 37-32 in Group F. The match will be at Clementi Sports Hall on Wednesday, June 27th, at 3pm.

Swiss Cottage will face off against Fajar Secondary, also on Wednesday June 27th, at 1.45pm, Clementi Sports Hall.
