Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, June 25, 2012 – Hua Yi Secondary easily beat Juying Secondary 68-21 in the West Zone C Division Basketball Championship. Hua Yi’s dominance was such that Juying went almost scoreless in the second and third quarters.

Hua Yi’s top scorers were Malcolm Lim (#15) with 19 points which he amassed in the first and second quarters, and Irwin Tay (#12), with 18, while he was on court in the second and fourth.

Irwin notably made several deadly-accurate shots from just inside the three-point line. In the second quarter alone, Irwin’s points equalled Juying’s top scorer #10’s points for the entire game.

This was not to say that Juying put up a poor show. Juying’s #10 and #12, backed by the rest of the offense, made numerous credible attempts at the basket throughout the game. However, their shots were unable to hit their mark, and this cost the team dearly as Hua Yi took full advantage of the rebounds they captured.

In both the second and third quarter, although Juying had no trouble penetrating Hua Yi’s defense, the Juying #10 was the only player to score any points with two in each quarter.

While Juying put up a much fiercer offense in the fourth quarter, it was too little, too late.

Hua Yi’s basketball coach, Poon Chong Lin, expressed that he was satisfied with the team’s performance, but there was room for improvement.

“I think they can do better in terms of organisation. They played well on fast breaks, but can improve on defense. It’s a young team, this is their first public competition. Hopefully they will adapt fast to the sport.”

Hua Yi’s team captain, Alex Chua (#9), was ebullient about the victory.

“Very excited today, this is our first competition, first time playing in Clementi Sports Hall. I think we played quite well, we led by almost 50 points. We need to improve on our defense,” said Alex.

Asked about his ambitions for this season, Alex immediately replied: “Obviously we want to get to top four! Every team wants to go to the top four.”

Hua Yi will next face Greenridge Secondary on Wednesday, July 4th, at 1.45pm while Juying will be fighting to redeem themselves against Nan Hua High on Friday, June 29th, at 3pm.

Both games are at Clementi Sports Hall.
