Singapore Sports School, Saturday, June 16, 2012 — Singapore’s Teo Zhen Ren broke the men’s national 1500 metres freestyle open record for the fourth time in less than a year, when he clocked a time of 15 minutes 43.08 seconds to finish second at the First South-east Asia Swimming Championships.

Zhen Ren, who turned 18 last month, improved on his three month-old record and Olympic ‘B’ timing of 15:43.63, but was disappointed with his showing. He said: “I expected to improve much more, and I felt good leading up to the race. Even during the race, I thought everything was going to plan.

“Something went wrong with my pacing, and I’d have to look at the videos to find out more. I think I should perhaps have gone out harder and faster at the start.”

Amanda Lim won the women’s 200m freestyle title and lowered her own three year-old personal best by a tenth of a second. She clocked a time of 2:02.76 and missed the Olympic ‘B’ mark of 2:02.47. Despite that, the 19 year old said: “I’m very happy with my time, as it was my first personal best timing in two years. I’m looking forward to the 50m freestyle tomorrow.

“I feel fresh, good to go, and I will try to post my fastest time and try to be one of Singapore’s fastest.”

Amanda holds the national 50m freestyle record of 25.38, and has a best of 26.14 this year.

The women’s 4x100m medley relay team, consisting of Shana Lim, Samantha Yeo, Tao Li and Mylene Ong, won Singapore’s only other gold medal of the night, clocking a time of 4:17.99. They were the only team in the field of three to finish the race, after Indonesia and Malaysia were disqualified when their anchor leg swimmers took off too early at the changeover.

The meet ends tomorrow evening.
