United World College, Sunday, May 20, 2012 — “I’m pretty satisfied. It was a good game,” said Jian Ming, 27, the captain of Telok Blangah Team 1 after his side had lost 47-62 to Boon Lay CSC.

Jian Ming played for Hwa Chong Institution and Combined Schools even though his secondary school, St Joseph’s Institution, did not have a basketball team. He had eight points in the game against Boon Lay.

“The Community Games is good. It helps us to bond. We have played together for six to seven years and we’re like brothers. We play regularly, about two times a week, on evenings and weekends,” said Jian Ming.

His Telok Blangah teammates have been a significant part of his life.

“I’ve been playing with them since 13. Half of my life! I was brought up by the seniors who are now married and retired. I’m the oldest one in the team now,” added Jian Ming.

“The team is a positive influence on the players so that they don’t go astray and do ‘funny things’. The team makes them feel like they belong. They have a place to go to every weekend. We have dinner or go out and watch movies together.”

The team plays at the Telok Blangah Community Club and the players live in the estate.
