United World College, Sunday, May 20, 2012 — West Coast CSC just managed to hold on to beat Telok Blangah Team 2 44-42 in the Community Games basketball tournament, but not before being given a big scare at the end.
West Coast CSC looked like they had the game sewn up after three quarters with a 12-point, 37-25 lead heading into the fourth. However, Telok Blangah, playing with only one man on the bench, exploded in the fourth quarter to come storming back with a 17-7 fourth-quarter performance.
However, Telok Blangah Team 2 just missed forcing the game into overtime when they missed a last-second basket, much to the relief of West Coast CSC.
“We were too complacent because we were leading by so much,” said Chriscendo Soh, 20, the captain of West Coast CSC. “Everybody wanted to score but forgot to play as a team.”
“Surprisingly, we were not tired,” said Lin Yih Song, 23, captain of Telok Blangah 2. “We told ourselves that when we had chances, we had to take a shot.”
“We saved our energy for three quarters and just went all out in the last quarter,” said Yih Song’s teammate, Quek Chong Meng.
The win means that West Coast CSC will go into the Cluster final against Boon Lay who beat Telok Blangah Team 1 67-42 in the other group game.
The best teams from each Cluster will move on to the Singapore National Games scheduled for September 1st to 9th.
