Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Thursday, April 5, 2012 – Singapore Sports School’s Muhammad Naqib Bin Asmin defended his B Division 200 metres title when he clocked a fast time of 22.34 seconds to win the final at the 53rd National Schools’ Track and Field Championships.

Naqib, 17, tore down the home straight to win in dominant fashion, finishing in a time which was tied for the fifth fastest ever in this division and also placed him as the joint-third fastest runner.

Timothy Ong of Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), last year’s Boys’ C Division 100m winner, was second in a time of 23.08. Seng Kang Secondary’s Shawn Poh, who won the C Division 200m title two years ago, clocked 23.18 to win the bronze medal.

Only Poh Seng Song, then of ACS(I), who holds the championship record of 21.88 set in 1999, and Jonah Tang (22.12 in 2003), then of Raffles Institution, have run faster than Naqib. Former Dunman Secondary and national runner Mohd Shameer also ran 22.34 seconds when he finished second behind Seng Song in the 1999 final.

Naqib clinched a 100m-200m double in the B Division last year. In the three years preceding his maiden gold medals, he took part in the 100m, 110m and 400m hurdles events.
