Peirce Secondary, Sunday, April 22, 2012 — Thomson-Toa Payoh CSC beat Bishan North 72-48 to secure their second win in a row in the Community Games basketball tournament.

They now have a perfect 2-0 win-loss record in Group B and will next play Toa Payoh West CSC (2-0) to decide who will top their group and move on to the Bishan-Toa Payoh Cluster final.

Thomson-Toa Payoh beat Toa Payoh Central 56-51 in their opening game.

Lim Ju Kai (#7) of Thomson-Toa Payoh led all scorers with 24 points, including five 3-pointers. His teammate, Tan Han Long (#11), joined him in double digits with 15.

Carlo Panabe (#1) had a team-high 19 points for Bishan North.

It was a close game in the first half, with little separating them at the end of each quarter. Ju Kai drained two 3-pointers in the first quarter for six of his Thomson-Toa Payoh’s 16 points, while Bishan North relied on Carlo Panabe for half of their 14 first-quarter points.

In the second quarter, Berfont Thum (#6) of Bishan North stepped in to drop seven of his team’s 14 points as they outscored their opponents 14-13 to trail by only one (28-29) at half time.

However, Bishan North could not keep up with Thomson-Toa Payoh in the third quarter. Jun Kai scored 10 of his team’s 23 points in that quarter as Thomson-Toa Payoh took a 10-point, 52-42 lead into the fourth.

Bishan North’s shooting fizzled out in the fourth as they were outscored 20-6 by a dominant Thomson-Toa Payoh team that wrapped up a 72-48 win at the final buzzer.

“We play every Friday at Thompson CC, opposite Long House,” said Wang Hong Wei, 28, the team manager for Thomson-Toa Payoh. “Some of us have played together in secondary school. I’ve known some of them since I was 12 years old.”

There are are a total of seven basketball teams playing in the Bishan-Toa Payoh Cluster. The top two teams in the Cluster will go on to play in the Singapore National Games scheduled for September 1st to 9th.
