Senja-Cashew Community Club, Sunday, April 15, 2012 — A new logo and mascot for the Singapore National Games were unveiled today and none were happier than their respective designers, Wen Yeu and Beatrice Cho.

Wen Yeu, 20, from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, saw his design receive almost 40% (997 of 2,624) of the total online votes cast for his design. His was one of four designs the public could vote on.

Beatrice Cho, 19, a first-year Singapore Polytechnic design student, came up with the runaway winning entry. Her mascot, ‘Nila’, received more than 70% (1,028 of 1,417) of the online voting at singaporenationalgames.sg. Her design was up against three others.

“I’m very delighted to win this contest and that Nila will be the mascot for the inaugural Singapore National Games! It has been a very good experience and is definitely a boost to my portfolio. I’m aslo looking forward to the internship so that I can learn more from industry professionals.”

As part of the contest, both Beatrice and Wen Yeu will get an internship at Publicis Singapore, an advertising and communications company. Both also received $1,000 each.

The logo and mascot were unveiled by Mr Teo Ser Luck, the adviser for the Singapore National Games steering committee.

“In the spirit of the Singapore National Games and the Community Games, we wanted to deepen community involvement and ownership by the public. The contest delivered on both counts — young design students showcased their creative skills for an important national event and over 4,000 people voted for their favourite designs.

“I hope, in the same spirit, more residents will continue engagin in sporting events such as these, to bond and live happier lives,” said Mr Teo, who is also the minister of state for the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

The Community Games began this afternoon in community clubs and schools across the island. 197 teams made up of over 1,000 residents will compete in the sports of badminton, basketball, bowling and football.

The Netball, sepak takraw and table tennis competitions will begin in May 2012.

The two best teams in every sport from each cluster will qualify for the Singapore National Games slated for September 1st to 9th, 2012.
