Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, March 26, 2012 — Raffles Girls’ School (RGS) came back in the final quarter to beat Kranji Secondary 47-46. This was their second win in the National B Division Basketball Championship following their 52-27 win over Manjusri Secondary in their opening game.

For Kranji, this is their second loss, after they went down 25-47 to Christ Church Secondary on opening day.

RGS looked set for an easy win aginst Kranji who finished fourth in the West Zone. But things played out differently as Kranji gave RGS a run for their money to take a slim three-point, 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

RGS came back out in the second quarter to gain a foothold in the game. They opened up the quarter with a 3-pointer to tie things up 11 a piece. Both teams then exchanged the lead a few times before it ended 17-17 at the break.

Kranji managed to regroup after the half-time break and went on a 5-0 to start the third quarter and pull away in the game. Kranji headed into the final quarter with an eight-point, 32-24 lead.

RGS came charging back in the final quarter, putting on a man-to-man defence which proved effective as they took back the lead midway through the fourth quarter.

RGS then led 43-36 with three minutes left in the quarter but Kranji exploded for back-to-back 3-pointers to trail only by one point.

RGS then got the lead back up to three points after getting a foul, forcing the Kranji coach to call a timeout with just 51.3 seconds left on the clock.

After the timeout, from an inbound pass, Kranji converted with a mid range basket to reduce the deficit to one at 44-45. RGS responded with a fast break to make it 47-44 and Kranji’s instant reply was a fast break basket to come within one point again at 46-47.

With the shot clock off and time running down, RGS had a sideline inbound pass which went totally wrong. An RGS player slipped up and Kranji went for the loose ball on the floor which resulted in a jump ball in favour of Kranji. But it was too little, too late, with only 0.3 seconds left on the clock, and RGS ran away with the game.
