B Div Vball (Girls): Dunman see off Nanyang Girls’ in Group Y match

Presbyterian High, Thursday, March 22, 2012 — Dunman Secondary ended Nanyang Girls’ High’s hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals after beating them 2-0 (25-20, 25-19) in a Round Two, Group Y match of the National B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship.

Despite a close start, Dunman managed to pull ahead to keep a slender lead over Nanyang. Nanyang tied the score at the 12-point and 16-point mark but were unable to turn the tables on Dunman as the latter held on to the lead.

Dunman were soon leading 24-20 after a hit error by Nanyang. Vinnie (Dunman #1) then took the set with a light tap that was not returned.

Dunman continued the second set with the lead as Nanyang had to play catchup. After a tie at the 9-9 mark, Dunman broke free and raced ahead to lead 22-15.

A timeout by Nanyang at this point momentarily broke Dunman’s streak as Nanyang managed to bring the score to 23-18. However, a hit error by Nanyang in the next rally allowed Dunman to take match point. Dunman were unable to convert in the next rally as they sent their spike out of bounds. They did not have to wait long as Nanyang sent their next serve out of bounds to gift them match point.

Dunman are now top of the table with five points after winning both their matches. Dunman will however still need to win their next match against Presbyterian High to assure themselves a spot in the semi-finals. If they were to lose to Presbyterian High 2-0, and Ngee Ann beat Nanyang Girls’ 2-0, they will drop to third place.

Nanyang are at the bottom with zero points after losing both their matches 2-0. Even if they were to win the match against Ngee Ann, they will not be able to overtake the other teams to enter the semi-finals.
