Presbyterian High, Monday, March 5, 2012 — Xinmin Secondary beat Ngee Ann Secondary 2-0 (25-19, 25-21) in their top of the table clash at the National B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship.

Both teams had come into the match already having qualified for the next round, but it was Xinmin who ultimately prevailed to finish on top of Group B.

Both teams were not far apart in the scoring tally with Xinmin scoring 27 points via 20 kills, two blocks and five service aces. Ngee Ann scored 23 points via 16 kills, four blocks and three service aces.

Xinmin were however the more consistent team during the match as Ngee Ann committed several hit errors to give the former a much needed advantage.

Xinmin ran off with the lead right at the start as they forced Ngee Ann to call a time out at the 9-4 mark. Xinmin subsequently took the next point after Mei Hui (Ngee Ann #1) sent her spike out of bounds.

Ngee Ann kept up the chase and got their chance to even the odds when three consecutive spiking errors by Xinmin saw the score stand at 10-8. Ngee Ann took the next point, and went on to level the score after a serve from Mei Hui (Ngee Ann #1) was deflected out of bounds by Xinmin.

Errors in Ngee Ann’s play unfortunately allowed Xinmin to lead once again.

Xinmin never let slip of their lead as they proceeded into the final points of the set. Ngee Ann tried their utmost best to close in, but despite coming to within one point of Xinmin at several occasions, they still had to contend with Xinmin pulling ahead once again.

Xinmin were soon leading 24-19 after scoring from a surprise shot. They were then handed the last point after Hui Bing (Ngee Ann #8) sent her spike into the net.

Ngee Ann started the second set on a more positive note as they raced ahead to lead 7-3. Xinmin managed to level the score 7-7, but saw Ngee Ann pull ahead to lead 17-11.

Xinmin continued their chase to stage a remarkable comeback as they were soon trailing by just one point at 21-20.

Ngee Ann had to call a timeout after the score was tied 21-21 following a hit error by their team.

Xinmin turned the tables on Ngee Ann as Ferlicia (Xinmin #10) stole the lead with a service ace. Xinmin then took the next point before Kim Choo (Xinmin #7) brought the team to match point with a spike off the Ngee Ann block.

It was a most unfortunate moment for Ngee Ann as in the next rally, they gifted the final point to Xinmin after a bad hit saw their free-ball go out of bounds.
