Jurong West Sports Complex, Friday, February 24, 2012 — Bukit Panjang Government High suffered their first loss of the season when they went down 36-50 to Nanyang Girls’ High in their final Round 2 game of the West Zone B Division Netball Championship.
It was a game to see who would top the group and Nanyang Girls’ proved the better team.
In the first quarter, Nanyang’s goal keeper read the game well and intercepted numerous passes outside the goal circle. The score was still close in the first quarter but Nanyang created a 10-goal lead in the second quarter by denying Bukit Panjang their center passes.
Although Bukit Panjang managed to compose themselves in the third quarter, the deficit proved too great to overcome Nanyang.
In another game, Nan Hua High beat Clementi Town Secondary 32-31 in an exciting game that went down to the final whistle. The win gave Nan Hua first place in their group while Clementi Town finished second. It was Clementi Town’s first loss of the season.
The dominant size and height of Clementi Town created a huge challenge for Nan Hua High but their brilliant strategy paid off as they managed to lead by four goals in the final minutes of the last quarter.
Clementi Town refused to give up the fight and staged a come back to trail by just one goal. However, the whistle was blown before they could put in a final goal to tie the game.
Nanyang Girls’ will be meeting Clementi Town Secondary in one semi-final while Nan Hua High will play Bukit Panjang in the other.
River Valley High won their final game of the season when they beat Regent Secondary 37-13. They had suffered two consecutive losses in Round 2 which put paid to their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals.
Yuan Ching Secondary also lost their first two Round 2 games but they finished off the season with a 39-26 victory over Commonwealth Secondary.
The four teams were out of the running for the semi-finals.
