North Zone B Div Volleyball: Presbyterian High beat Chung Cheng High (Yishun) to keep qualification race open

Presbyterian High, Monday, February 6, 2012 — Presbyterian High beat Chung Cheng High (Yishun) 2-0 (25-16, 25-19) in a Round 2 match at the North Zone B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship to keep the race for a semi-final berth wide open.

Both teams currently have three points with Presbyterian High having a match in hand. Presbyterian High’s current victory over Chung Cheng High means that should they lose 0-2 to Xinmin Secondary in their next match, all three teams will end up with three points and it will be down to a countback to determine which two schools will progress to the semi-finals. However, should Presbyterian High secure at least one set, they will progress to the next round alongside Chung Cheng High (Yishun).

In the other group, Sembawang Secondary secured a place in the semi-finals for themselves after edging out Evergreen Secondary 2-1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-17). They will play Anderson Secondary on Thursday to determine who finish on top.

The match between Presbyterian High and Chung Cheng High (Yishun) saw two relatively equal teams battle it out. In terms of kills, both teams were not far from each other with Presbyterian High posting 21 kills while Chung Cheng High had 20. However, Chung Cheng were let down by their hit errors, with 13 errors compared to Presbyterian High’s 3.

Amanda Tan (Presbyterian High #11) topped the table as the match top scorer with 14 points scored (8 kills, 4 blocks, 2 service ace).

Presbyterian High had started off on a good note as they pulled ahead to an early lead. Chung Cheng High seemed to be unable to settle their nerves as errors caused them to drop valuable points. As Presbyterian High pulled ahead, they never looked back and finished the set 25-16.

The second set was also a relatively lop-sided one in the first half as Presbyterian High broke free from a brief stalemate to establish a 20-11 lead.

However, Chung Cheng High did not allow the defending champions to have an easy win. Chung Cheng High fought back to narrow the score gap. Trailing 16-23, a defensive error from Chung Cheng High allowed Presbyterian High to get set point.

Chung Cheng High managed to save three consecutive set points, with Wen Ting (Chung Cheng High #8) scoring two points from the centre. A timeout by Presbyterian High at this moment unfortunately broke Chung Cheng High’s momentum as they sent their subsequent spike out of bounds to gift Presbyterian High the set.
