Shah Alam, Tuesday, December 13, 2011 — The Singapore LionsXII have a big monetary incentive if they can win the 2012 Malaysia Super League (MSL).

The Football Association of Malaysia have announced a 50% increase in prize money for the winners of the 2012 league, according to Malaysian news agency

The winner will get RM750,000 (S$306,000), up from RM500,000 (S$204,000) previously. RM450,000 (S$183,000) will go to the runners-up while the third-placed team will get RM300,000 (S$122,000).

The S.League offers much less — S$150,000, S$75,000 and S$40,000 for the first, second and third-placed teams respectively.

The Lions are scheduled to kick off their MSL campaign on January 10th at the Jalan Besar Stadium. Fixtures will be out on Wednesday, December 13th.

The Lions will also have to get used to playing most of their MSL games at 4:45pm because the majority of Malayian stadiums do not meet the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) lighting requirements for night matches, according to This is because only four stadiums — Bukit Jalil Stadium, Darul Aman Stadium (Kedah), Stadium Utama Kangar (Perlis) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Athletics Stadium — meet the minimum lighting standard of 1200 lux.

Two stadiums — Shah Alam Stadium and Kuala Lumpur Stadium — are being upgraded and are expected to be ready in March 2012.

Jalan Besar Stadium, the venue for the Singapore Lions’ home games, was upgraded to 1400 lux in 2009 to meet the AFC requirements for television broadcasts. It was previously only 700 lux. The old National Stadium floodlights were 650 lux.
