Marina Bay, Sunday, September 4, 2011 –- More than 70,000 runners took part in the Singapore Bay Run & Army Half Marathon (SSBR & AHM). This was the 20th anniversary of the event.

While the run took runners past 20 iconic Singapore landmarks, this was the first time the race did not encompass the Benjamin Sheares Bridge.

Runners of the 21km AHM were flagged-off at 5.15am from the Esplanade Bridge and were treated to a luminous night display along Bay East at Gardens By The Bay and Marina Barrage. A 350m stretch was illuminated with lighted cones and rainbow-hued LED strip lights.

Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Defence, flagged off the SAFRA 5km Fun Run before joining in the run with participants.

Brigadier General (BG) Perry Lim, Chairman of the Organising Committee for SSBR & AHM 2011 and Vice President, SAFRA, commented, “The SSBR & AHM is currently the longest-running running event in Singapore and it is truly a milestone to be able to celebrate its 20th anniversary with a strong crowd of 70,000.

“Over the years, our focus has been on providing a value-for-money and well-organised event with fresh highlights each year to engage and excite runners. The strong turnout today is an affirmation that we are in the right direction and we hope that runners will continue to support the event in many more years to come, even as we provide more opportunities for them to keep fit, bond and have fun together.”

A new event was introduced this year: the Dads For Life 800m Father & Child Challenge. A total of 614 father-and-child pairs took part. Of these, 378 father-and-child pairs qualified for the record-setting attempt in the Singapore Book of Records for the ‘Largest Father and Child Race’.
