ITE College East, Tuesday, July 5, 2011 — Peter Soo’s trey sparked a decisive Singapore 12-1 run in the third quarter to effectively seal the third place for Singapore in the 3rd ASEAN Schools Games basketball competition. The hosts eventually cruised to a 64-49 win over Indonesia.

The Philippines finished first when they beat Malaysia 73-45 in the final.

In the girls’ competition, Singapore finished last when they lost their final round-robin game 40-62 to Thailand.

Coming off an exhausting loss against Malaysia in the semi-final, the Singapore boys appeared tentative in the early stages, missing on a few early attempts. Indonesia, on the other hand, found success through their huge centre (#14) making his presence felt in the paint.

Yet twins Peter and David Soo rallied with mid-range jumpers to bring Singapore level at 9-9. Singapore’s captain Ng Kian Hao also contributed off the bench to give the hosts a 21-16 advantage after the first quarter.

The second quarter saw a fierce Indonesian 10-3 rally that enabled them to close the gap to 30-31 at the end of the half. Singapore’s forwards certainly did not help their cause with several turnovers while the Indonesian players were spot on from the perimeter. A final long-range jumper by Ng Wei Xiang (#6) however enabled Singapore to take a one-point lead into the half-time break.

The third quarter proved key for the hosts as they broke out for a double-digit lead with a 19-7 scoring advantage. Forward Wong Keng Yang (#8) contributed five crucial points during this period with a three-pointer and a breakaway lay up while the Singapore players collapsed on the Indonesian centre (#14) whenever the ball was passed to him.

That strategy was to prove effective as Singapore never looked back, rotating their bench for a 64-49 win and a third-placed finish to conclude a satisfying run in the ASEAN Schools basketball tournament.
