Kallang Squash Centre, Tuesday, April 19, 2011 — Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) caused a minor upset when they beat Methodist Girls’ School 3-2 yesterday in a closely fought National B Division Squash Championships semi-final match.

The heroine for SCGS was former national junior trainee Rachael Ang, who beat current national junior trainee Cheryl Wong 3-1 in a tense decider.

MGS registered the first point on the scoreboard when Alethea Sim, the current top National Under-17 girls player, beat Anira Pereira 3-0. However, the tie was evened up when Natalie Tan (MGS) lost to Samantha Phey 3-0. SCGS surged ahead when their third player, Rui Chen, emerged victorious against Deborah (MGS) with a 3-0 result.

The fourth tie turned out to be both a titanic and intense affair, as two familiar foes, Victoria Leow (MGS) and Kong Rui Ting (SCGS) faced-off for this critical match. Rui Ting had narrowly beaten Victoria 3-2 in their most recent couple of competitive matches. This time, however, the tables were turned, as Victoria, under tremendous pressure, delivered the crucial victory to keep her school in the game. She beat her worthy opponent 3-2 to exact some form of revenge for her past defeats.

Unfortunately for MGS, there was not to be a fairy-tale ending for them, as Rachael Ang proved a tad too good for Cheryl Wong. Rachel took the final point for her school to send SCGS to the final which will be played on April 21st. They will meet Raffles Girls’ School, and it will be another great contest between two evenly-poised teams. As for MGS, the core of their team are Year Three students and they will be back for another shot at the B Division title in 2012.
