St Andrew’s Junior College, Tuesday, March 29, 2011 — Anderson Junior College won their opening Group B match of the National A Division Football Championship when they beat Catholic Junior College 2-0.

CJC, clad in sky-blue jerseys, battled hard against an equally robust AJC team but it was testament to the players’ sportsmanship that most clashes ended with a smile and a handshake.

The CJCians started well playing the ball on the ground however, the physical nature of the match seemed to disrupt their rhythm and soon their opponents were turning the tables on them with their wing play. The right winger of AJC provided the speed and trickery and was pivotal in more than a couple of his team’s attack.

CJC withstood the attacks with their tough tackling defence which was backed up by a pair of safe hands in the form of their skipper, Aaron Teo (#20). However, they seemed susceptible to long, high balls and this proved to be their undoing.

Just before half time, AJC capitalised on a mistake from a long punt, with the ball going over the last defender and, with the CJC goalkeeper charging out, AJC’s Vietnamese player Bui Doan Huy (#8) kept his cool to volley his first goal of the season from just outside the box.

CJC responded in the second half with a more spirited display showing more drive and purpose. However, the comeback was not to be as AJC finished off any hopes with a second goal in the last twenty minutes of the game through Melvin Joel (#18) who had the simplest of tasks tapping in from the six-yard box after Aaron Teo had parried a header onto the cross bar.

AJC coach Mr. Mohanadas was visibly pleased with his boys.

“I am very pleased with today’s game,” he said, although he was also quick to add that he would take “one game at a time.”

CJC seemed overawed by the occasion and perhaps this was understandable as 14 J1s make up the bulk of the team.

Despite the loss, CJC coach, Clement Teo, believes in the potential of his boys.

“The commitment level of the boys were good and we are preparing them for next year,” said the coach, although he was under no illusions.

“This result only shows that we are not good enough,” he added.
